Cybersecurity Intern

Job Description

The three-year plan outlines a working model designed to expose the student to a broad set of information security duties and skills. This skill set includes hard technical skills needed to understand IT vulnerabilities and risk mitigation and the soft skills necessary to communicate the risk to a larger audience effectively. This internship is an excellent opportunity for a student to gain hands-on practical experience along with the potential to build a sustainable Information Security Intelligence system.

Year 1
Responsibility/Function

  1. Building a cybersecurity awareness program targeting the student community. The goal of this initiative is to design, test, and implement awareness campaigns that:
    • Educate the student community on emerging cyber risks and scam
    • Guide best practices and advice to stay safe while online
    • Through the academic year, the ISO will work with the student on developing subject matter skills using Open Source Intelligence (OSINT). This initiative includes exploring media options to market relative OSINT to the student community
  2. Assist with Risk Assessment Reporting and Mitigation. This initiative aims to provide the student with hands-on exposure to IT risk reduction and mitigation efforts. Risk reduction is a significant component of information security programs. Tasks under this initiative will include investigating risk mitigation options specific to operational vulnerabilities, partaking in quarterly Security Advisory Group meetings with Faculty/Staff.

Year 2
Responsibility/Function

Develop 91º£½ÇÂÒÂ× student cybersecurity intelligence center. The goal of year 2 is to expose the student to the challenges with building and maintaining a working system (i.e., costs, space, resources, etc.). During this time, the ISO will work with the student on bringing an idea to life. This initiative will include documenting system requirements, working through cost constraints and budgets, and developing ongoing operational plans.

Year 3
Responsibility/Function

Continuous Improvement Skills. The goal is to allow the student to explore options to improve the skills and system(s) they developed during years 1 and 2. This initiative will include defining and calculating measurable metrics to track the Security Awareness Programs' effective rates. Also, it will allow the student to expand the security intelligence program with National higher education consortiums such as REN-ISAC and Internet2.
