Commuter Assistant

Job Description

The Commuter Assistant will work alongside the Director of Student and Family Assistance to aid new and transfer commuters in their transition to life at 91º£½ÇÂÒÂ×. This position will allow the FIT Student to have experience in programming, networking, and working with a diverse populations of their peers. This position will assist in creating a sense of belonging and support for our commuter population's success both in and outside of the classroom.

This FIT position will help the student with leadership, communication, networking and working as part of a team to support our community. This FIT position will learn more about the specific needs of commuters and how to support them in their participation on campus (this would be a great experience for Psychology, Education or Communication students). The FIT position will provide training on student life resources (similar to other paid leadership positions) to ensure that the students have the support and background to assist others. 

Year 1 
Responsibility/Function 

  • Develop positive relationships with commuter students; meet 1-1 with first-year and transfer commuter students throughout the semester through "Intentional Conversations"
  • Disseminate routine information to commuters on campus resources (Counseling Center, Health Services, Career Center, Public Safety, Financial Aid, the lntercultural Center, Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution, and the Center for Student Academic Success), processes, and deadlines
  • Work with Commuter Connections program for first year commuters
  • Work with Student Life staff with creating community building programs for commuter students
  • Engage commuters using social media outlets; maintain commuter Hawk Link page and send out a regular commuter newsletter via email in collaboration with your co-Commuter Assistant
  • Promote commuter engagement in campus clubs, organizations and campus events.
  • Initiate, plan and organize educational and/or social programs that respond to the needs and interests of commuters as needed, especially through collaboration with the Commuters in Action (CIA) club
  • Communicate with supervisor regularly about intentional conversations, programs and events, and the commuter community through bi-weekly 1-ls and meetings as needed
  • Attend Commuter in Action Club Meetings

Year 2 
Responsibility/Function 

  • Continue with Year 1 Responsibilities
  • Present at June, August and January Orientation to incoming commuter students
  • Create and Administer Commuter Student Life survey
  • Attend Admissions events to represent life of a commuter
  • Work to create promotions and advertising for all Commuter Connections and programming
  • Assist in coordination and planning of commuter meet up in the Dining Commons
  • Work with Commuter in Actions Club with programming

Year 3
Responsibility/Function 

  • Continue with Years 1 and 2 responsibilities
  • Create Commuter Assistant FIT Transition Materials
  • Assist in Interviewing for Future FIT Interns
  • Create Commuter student life survey; measure results with previous year information
  • Mentor new Commuter Assistants in their role

*Students are prohibited from driving during work-study employment with the limited exception of authorized work-study driver positions.
